Maintaining healthy turf in golf country clubs is crucial for both the aesthetic appeal and playability of the course. The quality of the turf directly impacts the golfer’s experience, as well-maintained greens and fairways provide smoother, more predictable playing surfaces. However, achieving and maintaining this quality is challenging due to factors like water quality, soil conditions, and environmental stresses.
Yorba Linda Country Club (YLCC) faced significant challenges with its water quality, which included high mineral and salt content, low oxygen levels, and poor water penetration. These issues led to excessive maintenance requirements, including frequent aeration, chemical treatments, and costly water usage. To address these concerns, Kairospace Technologies implemented its KST Skid system, which uses a combination of nanobubble technology with oxygen and ozone injection to improve water quality, enhance turf health, and reduce overall operational costs. The pilot aimed to demonstrate the system’s effectiveness in improving the club’s turf conditions and its potential economic benefits.
The implementation of the KST Skid system at Yorba Linda Country Club led to substantial improvements in turf management and water efficiency. The treated areas showed a 35.4% reduction in compacted salts, significantly improving soil structure and root health. Water penetration increased by 24.7%, reducing surface pooling and promoting deeper root growth. Additionally, the dissolved oxygen levels in the treated water were 300% higher, resulting in healthier turf and a noticeable reduction in algae growth. Overall, the system demonstrated its effectiveness in enhancing both turf quality and sustainability.
The economic benefits observed from the Kairospace water system at Yorba Linda Country Club were significant. The improved water penetration led to reduced water consumption, potentially saving a considerable portion of the club’s $200,000 annual water bill. The enhanced turf health also resulted in decreased maintenance costs, including fewer aeration cycles and reduced chemical usage, which could lead to savings in the club’s $500,000 labor budget. Additionally, healthier turf improved playability, reducing downtime and increasing revenue potential from memberships and events.

The KST Ag PACK system successfully addressed the water and turf management challenges at Yorba Linda Country Club, providing both environmental and economic benefits. The results support broader implementation of this technology to enhance sustainability and operational efficiency in similar settings.
The pilot program involved installing the KST water treatment skid system in the irrigation pump house at YLCC, specifically targeting the irrigation of Green #9 while Greens #7 and #8 served as control sites. The system infused water with both oxygen and ozone in the form of nanobubbles, which were intended to improve water penetration, reduce salt compaction, and enhance dissolved oxygen levels in the lake and irrigation water. Over several months, key indicators such as soil electrical conductivity (EC), volumetric water content (VWC), and dissolved oxygen (DO) levels were meticulously monitored. Additionally, soil samples were regularly analyzed to assess changes in root development, soil compaction, and overall turf health.
Soil conductivity measurement is a valuable tool in turf management, as it helps assess the electrical conductivity (EC) of the soil, which is closely related to the soil’s nutrient content, salinity, and moisture levels. By measuring soil conductivity, turf managers can gain insights into the distribution of nutrients and water in the soil, allowing for more precise irrigation and fertilization practices. This data helps optimize soil health, improve turfgrass growth, and reduce waste from over-fertilization or over-watering. Additionally, understanding soil conductivity can aid in identifying areas of the turf that may need remediation or special attention, leading to more efficient and sustainable turf management.
Soil Water Volume Content (WVC) measurement is a crucial practice in turf management for assessing the soil’s moisture levels, which directly impact turf health and growth. By measuring WVC, turf managers can determine the amount of water present in the soil, ensuring that grass receives adequate hydration without over-watering or under-watering. Accurate WVC data helps optimize irrigation schedules, improve water-use efficiency, and prevent waterlogging or drought stress. It also assists in identifying areas of the turf that may require targeted irrigation or soil amendments, contributing to healthier, more resilient turfgrass while promoting sustainable water use in golf courses, sports fields, and lawns.
In turf management, the use of water with increased dissolved oxygen (DO) content can significantly enhance turfgrass health and root development. When water is enriched with dissolved oxygen, it promotes better root respiration, improving nutrient uptake and overall plant vitality. Higher DO levels also help reduce the risk of root diseases by creating an environment that supports beneficial microbial activity in the soil. This can lead to stronger, more resilient turfgrass that is better able to withstand stress from factors like drought or disease. Additionally, oxygen-enriched water can improve soil structure by reducing compaction and promoting deeper root growth, resulting in a more robust and drought-tolerant turf. By incorporating DO-enhanced irrigation, turf managers can achieve healthier, more sustainable landscapes with improved water-use efficiency.
